Finding your BLISS | Naperville Wedding Photographer

Life isn’t a race nor should it be treated like one.

Its funny when I look back at the last ten years. I use to think that since I didn’t finish college when all my friends did, find the perfect man and haven’t popped out a bunch of babies that I was doing something wrong..?  I wasn’t following the social norms that had been ingrained in me..

I realize that even if I had done those things at the “appropriate” times my life, my experiences and my perceptions would be completely different. There is no way I would be the same artist I am today had my life been different.

Why rush through life?  Take a moment to enjoy your bliss.

Secrets UNLEASHED | A look into my world | Chicago Illinois Wedding Photographer

(This is so me BTW)

Yah for training! Erin Leppo Photography is making some HUGE changes and couldn’t be more excited about it! Oh Omgee…I am going to fill you in on some JUICY little secrets going on here behind the scenes, some secrets into my photography style, philosophy and a few ultra personal tid bits!

Here we go…Secrets UNLEASHED!

….We have a new addition to Erin Leppo Photography!!?!?!

I am bringing on my best friend, my partner in crime, my beautiful and oh so fun sister Lauren in to the Erin Leppo Photography team this wedding season (and hopefully future years to come)! She has stepped up to the plate and is now officially my second shooter!

Over the last few months I have been worrying, ok, tweaking out about who would be my second shooter this year. There were some really big shoes that needed to be filled (from the past years second). Picking a second shooter was one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make for my business. I had options of other local new photographers, friends and my sister-who ever it was going to be… That person needed to be someone who I completely trusted. My business, brand and customer service is something that I have been working on for the last 4 years. I have put in so much blood, sweat and tears into my business and brand. (Well, ok not blood) hah.

Lauren is the perfect person for the job. Besides being my best friend she is quite an amazing person. She is a middle school science teacher and is absolutely incredible with people. She has the gift of making everyone she comes into contact with feel empowered and beautiful. Which is a very important key to creating authentic and fun photos. She can bring out the vulnerability of a person in a photo.

Since I have decided that Lauren is a new and permanent addition to Erin Leppo Photography we have set up some practice shoots. Lauren is already very knowledgeable on photography and knows how to use aperture, shutter speed, iso, and all the differences of the lenses and such. But what we needed to do is be on board with what kind of pictures I want (and what my clients expect) and have a better knowledge of LIGHT.

There are a few things that are KEY to my photography style and creating the perfect customer experience!  Here are a few examples: take home message:

  • Have fun! If you as the photographer feels tense, seem stressed or even have an inkling of uncertainty, YOUR CLIENTS WILL KNOW AND will NOT trust you! (and will not be able to capture real and genuine photos)
  • Which brings me to my second and oh so CRUCIAL point. If you find yourself feeling nervous or feel like things are going up into FLAMES?!? That is so totally normal. Take a moment, find some composure and fake it till you make it! I too STILL feel the stress.
  • Find beautiful light. Ask someone at the wedding to be your test subject for a few shots and test the light from a few different angles. Straight on light from the sun is generally not the most pleasing.
  • Connect with the client and coach them into pleasing poses. Not all bodies or faces are alike so why would we photograph them the same?
  •  I like giving my clients a pep talk before the shoot and give them continuous feedback through out the shoot. They seem to really appreciate it and respond well to it. Let them know what to expect out of the shoot
  • HUGE: get the focus right and use a shallow depth of field
  • Oh and again..have fun, create the ideal atmosphere and expect to make some mistakes…and when we do make mistakes. Learn from them and don’t make them twice.

Who took what photos??:

Here are some photographs of me(taken by Lauren)

Photographs of Lauren (taken by me, Erin)

Photographs of Lauren and I (taken by Stephen)

And here are some practice shots that Lauren took of Stephen and I at the Indiana Dunes.

So on to the picture part of the blog..Stephen (my boyfriend) and I went to the Indiana Dunes last week for vacation and WOW. I was in absolute amazement of the pure blissful beauty of the dunes, Lake Michigan and the marshes! Impromptu photoshoot?!? Yes please! Lauren came down for the day and we all had a photography party. Here are some of our favorites from the day!

Engagement Sessions | Ideas | Inspirations and Loveeee | Chicago Illinois Wedding Photographer

(Photocredit)

So, I just looked at the calendar for March and I noticed I have six engagement sessions booked (For April) and not to mention I have received several e-mails from clients asking me for help!! “What are we to wear?? We have no idea where we want to shoot!!” “we are so lost”

They are like Erin, please help!

Ha ha! Ok, here is my best shot..

Lets start with Marie. It wasn’t long ago when we were planning their engagement session. I met Marie in person over her Christmas break and learned all about her and Bryan. Bryan just finished his PhD from Stanford and Marie is finishing  up hers now at Cal and they both love to read and hike. We weren’t sure where we were going to do the shoot but all I knew was that they needed to pick a location that was more suited towards them (just like all my couples). Of course, we could do the whole “city” engagement session thing. But, when I met Marie I saw a more country-ish type session…fields..walking..nature,love. I wanted her to look back at her engagement session in twenty years and think oh damn. I love this location, it really reminds me of this one time when I was a kid…etc etc*brings smiles*. Oh gee. Marie ended up picking the Danada house because her family has property on the other side and its just absolutely beautiful. It was really a perfect engagement session location for them.

In a nutshell, I want us to bring our heads together and think about a place that really speaks to you. Ok, maybe nothing pops up immediately.

How about we think of the things you love to do together and lets start there… I came up with a list of engagement session locations and ideas that inspire me and I hope it helps! Don’t be afraid to try something new and even experiment with some ideas! I mean who cares? If our idea doesn’t work we shall just scratch it!;)Lately, I have been thinking about really wanting to do a spring/RAINY engagement session. Where my couple is wearing a pair of rain boots and they play in puddles after the rain. It may sound silly or dumb to you now…but I swear I see it as possibly being something exceptionally awesome.. Just waiting on that one couple to try it out!
